The Evolving Masterplan

In 2016, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) announced its intention to close St. George’s Barracks and redevelop it to provide jobs and housing as part of its Better Defence Estate strategy and to support the Government’s housing targets.

Rutland County Council and the MOD formed a partnership to ensure future development on the site is controlled, sustainable and meets local needs.

In May 2018, a Draft High-Level Masterplan that outlined aspirations for the site was presented to Rutland residents for thoughts and feedback. Work has also been undertaken under phase 1 of the project to assess the feasibility and understand the impact of redeveloping the site.

This feedback and evidence has been used to produce the Evolving Masterplan. The document charts the journey so far by bringing together the policy context, placemaking theory and consultation approach to provide a potential future framework for redeveloping the site (page 53).

The Evolving Masterplan has been provided to the St. George’s Advisory Group for feedback and will be presented to Rutland County Council’s Cabinet on 18th December 2018 and Rutland County Council’s Full Council on 21st January 2018.
